AmneziaWG Tutorial: How to Set Up the Best WireGuard Alternative for Russia

For years, WireGuard was the gold standard for personal VPNs. It was fast, lightweight on mobile batteries, and incredibly easy to set up. But in August 2023, the Russian censor (Roskomnadzor) flipped a switch, and standard WireGuard stopped working across major mobile providers.

Why? Because WireGuard was never designed for censorship evasion.

The Neon Sports Car Analogy: Standard WireGuard is like a blazing fast sports car with a giant neon sign on the roof that says “I AM A VPN.” When it drives past a digital checkpoint (DPI—Deep Packet Inspection), the guard immediately sees the sign and drops a concrete barrier.

Enter AmneziaWG.

AmneziaWG is the exact same sports car, but painted in radar-absorbent matte black. It takes the core WireGuard code and slightly randomizes the packet sizes and headers (the “neon sign”). The censor’s DPI system looks at the traffic, doesn’t recognize the signature, and lets it pass through.

The Advantages of AmneziaWG over VLESS

We talk a lot about VLESS and Reality on this blog. VLESS is incredibly robust, but it has a downside: it’s heavy. VLESS runs on TCP, imitating a standard HTTPS web browser connection. This causes overhead, which drains your phone battery slightly faster and can increase ping in online games.

AmneziaWG runs on UDP. It is stateless and incredibly fast. If you are a gamer, or if you just want maximum speed on your phone with minimal battery drain, AmneziaWG is often the better choice.

The Brutal Reality: The Whitelist Threat

I need to be radically honest with you: AmneziaWG is not bulletproof.

Because AmneziaWG simply “hides” the WireGuard signature, the traffic looks like randomized UDP garbage to the censor. Right now, the censor uses a “blacklist” approach—blocking only what it recognizes as bad. Under a blacklist, AmneziaWG wins.

But if the censor ever switches to a strict “whitelist” approach—dropping all traffic it doesn’t recognize—AmneziaWG will be blocked instantly. VLESS Reality survives whitelists because it perfectly mimics a normal connection to a normal website. AmneziaWG does not.

How to Set It Up

Setting up AmneziaWG used to require compiling custom kernel modules, which was a nightmare. Today, thanks to the 3X-UI panel, it is just a toggle switch.

1. Deploy your VPS: Get a cheap server outside of Russia.
2. Install 3X-UI: Run the standard installation script for the 3X-UI panel.
3. Add an Inbound: In the panel, click “Add Inbound.”
4. Select Protocol: Choose wireguard from the dropdown.
5. Enable Amnezia: You will see a checkbox that says “Amnezia”. Check it. The panel will automatically generate the obfuscation parameters (Jc, Jmin, Jmax, S1, S2, H1, H2, H3, H4).
6. Download the App: You cannot use the standard WireGuard app on your phone. You must download the dedicated AmneziaWG app from the App Store or Google Play.
7. Scan the QR Code: Generate the client in 3X-UI, scan the QR code with the AmneziaWG app, and you are online.
